If you're traveling to Bucharest and you take coffee seriously, you're in luck. The specialty coffee scene here has grown rapidly in the past 5 years — from "there's nothing" to "this competes with Berlin or Vienna."
Bucharest's specialty coffee scene in 2026
The scene is small but tight. About 8-10 specialty cafes citywide, mostly in central districts (Sector 1, 2, 4). Some import green beans and roast on-site. Others source from European roasters and focus on brewing.
What you'll find:
- Single-origin pour-overs — V60, Chemex, AeroPress on the menu of every serious place
- Tasting notes on the bag — not just "coffee" but specific origin + processing + flavor
- Knowledge from baristas — ask about the lot, you'll get a real answer
- European prices — expect 18-25 RON ($4-5 USD) for a specialty coffee
Where to start — Sector 1
Most specialty cafes are in Sector 1 (the central, historic district). Walking distance: ideal for a coffee tour.
Incognito Coffee Roasters
Incognito is at Str. Institutul Medico-Militar 22 — a few minutes from Piata Romana. The space is iconic: a custom-designed concrete house by architect Bogdan Gyemant-Selin. Cafe upstairs, roastery in the basement (Diedrich IR-12, 3 days/week). 5 single origins in rotation. Open Thu-Sun.
Other places worth visiting
We won't list specific competitors here, but a quick Google search for "specialty coffee Bucharest" will give you names like Origo, Beans & Dots, M60, Skil. Each has its own focus. Worth visiting all if you have time.
What to order at Incognito (and how)
If you're new to specialty coffee:
- Espresso: ask for a "single shot" (smaller, more concentrated) or "double shot" (more volume). Don't add sugar before tasting — specialty coffee has natural sweetness.
- V60 pour-over: ask for the lightest origin we have on the menu. Will be vibrant, almost tea-like.
- Capuccino / Latte: yes, we make them. Ask for which origin you want as the base.
- Cold brew (summer only): smooth, sweet, low-acid. Great with milk or as is.

What to bring back home
If you want to take Bucharest's specialty coffee home with you:
- 250g bags: lightweight, fits in checked or carry-on luggage. We have 5 origins right now.
- 1kg bags: for serious drinkers. Better value per gram.
- Subscription: monthly box shipped to your door (we ship internationally). See plans
Roasted Mon-Wed before your trip = peak freshness when you get home.
Tipping & etiquette
Romania has a soft tipping culture. 10% on the bill is appreciated but not expected. If you sit down for a long brunch with a tip your barista paid extra attention to brewing your coffee just right — acknowledging that with a small tip is class.
Why Bucharest, why now
Bucharest's specialty scene grew up alongside the Eastern European specialty wave — Prague (Lulu), Sofia, Budapest. The infrastructure is here: green bean importers, trained baristas, a customer base that learned the difference between specialty and commodity in the past decade.
If you've explored specialty in Berlin, Vienna, or Tel Aviv — Bucharest deserves a spot on the same map.
